These are the best "POP UP!" Pictures

Result of the photo competition

What exactly are pop photos? That's exactly what we wanted to know from the participants in our last photo competition "POP UP! In the frenzy of colors". In the course of the new Schnappschuss edition we called for this photo contest in advance and wanted to tie in with the theme of this year's "POP" magazine, which was published at the beginning of November for the D?sseldorf Fototage at the beginning of November. We approached it with an open mind and, to be honest, had no idea exactly what kind of pictures to expect. With "We are looking for gaudy, shrill, particularly dynamic or crazy motifs." we didn't make it easy for the participants, but we also left the genre open to a certain extent. We didn't expect the huge response, around 1350 pictures from over 500 participants, but we are all the more pleased about it. The jury therefore had to select the five best pictures from the countless very good ones. Not an easy task.
The winning pictures are characterized by very trendy colors and a lot of wit in the motifs, which means that the photographers have fulfilled the task exactly.

As usual, the jury meeting was characterized by long discussions, differences of opinion and, in the end, very satisfied jurors. The best picture came from Heiko Dworak from Essen. Born in Witten, the amateur photographer dabbles in many different areas of photography and submitted three pictures in the pop art style. His photo with the ironic staging of a glass of cola was finally voted first place, as it was convincing with a lot of humor. Second place went to Catrin Baldischweiler from Gundelfingen. She wrote to us afterwards that the picture was taken as part of a photo series from an artistic point of view. She tried out a new technique herself, which was quite complex and took several days, as the photographer experimented with different motifs, colors, light and settings until she was able to achieve a satisfactory result. "Thematically, it's about a change of perspective beyond what is actually tangible - the attempt to narrow down something that lies outside our own boundaries and, last but not least, about regaining access to childlike wonder as an adult," says the prizewinner. Camilla Zalewski from Karlsruhe took third place with a picture that is part of a 6-part series that was created in her own studio. The idea was to work with pastel colors right from the start. "I like to be colorful and work with surprising color combinations. The sweets should underline the pastel colors, light and sweet," she told us afterwards. She did the outfit and styling, while the make-up and hair were done by Jacqueline Schlickert-Mayenfels. The photo of fourth-placed Boris Heinke was taken during this year's summer vacation on the way back from the Atlantic coast during a stopover in the mustard city of Dijon. "If you follow the path of the owl (a city tour marked by owl signs on the ground), sooner or later you will come across specialty mustard stores and learn that mustard doesn't always have to be yellow and spicy, but can also be offered in pink with a hint of strawberry flavor, for example," recalls the Erkrath native. Dario Raspudic's picture also comes from a series. It bears the name "Germany and Bread: A Slice of Art" and began with a food shoot for a new bistro/caf? in D?sseldorf, where the "sandwiches" for the menu were to be photographed. The color backgrounds were taken over 1to1. So it is not a Photoshop montage, but was solved with colored paper. With his fifth place, the D?sseldorf photographer rounds off the field of winners Unfortunately, only the first five places could be honored, but there were countless other pictures that just missed out on the "podium". We admire the high quality of all the entries and look forward to all participants taking part in the next photo competitions. You can view all the submitted pictures here:
