Whether it's fashion, product photography, food photography, fine art or for composings, the flash is always used in photography. Studio flashes are the ideal devices for working in the studio, as they have a power supply unit that helps the flash recharge quickly to flash again. Studio flash units consist of some components which are particularly suitable for working in the studio.
- Radio for triggering the flash via radio - a trigger is needed for this purpose
- Modeling light, this allows you to see if the light is aligned according to your ideas before firing.
- Usually higher output than portable flash units.
- Connection for light shapers
Advantages of studio flashes
Studio flashes offer a number of advantages for photographers. Some of them are:
- Control over light: studio flashes allow photographers to adjust the light exactly as they need it to achieve the desired effect.
- High power: Studio flashes are usually very powerful and produce a lot of light, making it possible to shoot in low light conditions or in large spaces.
- Synchronization with the camera: studio flashes can usually be triggered synchronously with the camera, which makes it easier to capture fast movements. (HS / HSS necessary)
- Variety of light shapers: studio flashes usually have a variety of light shapers such as reflectors, softboxes and umbrellas that allow the light to be shaped and controlled.
- Controllability: studio flashes allow photographers to precisely adjust the power of the flashes to match the lighting to the situation.
How a studio flash works
A studio flash consists of a sturdy housing and a flash head to which the flash tube is attached. The flash head also has a modeling light so that you can check the effect on the shot in advance. The housing of the flash is sturdily built and designed to dissipate heat from the lamp and prevent damage during transport. In terms of operation, the flash tube plays an important role. It is mounted around the modeling lamp and can be replaced in most cases if it is damaged. The quality of the flash depends on the color temperature, and many flash units are close to a natural white color temperature. If the flash is controlled remotely, it will not give the same output continuously. Therefore, it is important to adjust the camera so that it is optimally matched to the flash. In this case, it is necessary to make the settings manually in order to have full control over the shot. The aperture should be set high for portrait photography (at least f/8.0), but may be slightly lower for smaller subjects. Shutter speed must match the flash sync speed of the flash & camera, which is often between 1/100 and 1/200. Faster exposure times are also possible with cameras that have TTL with HSS.
