Outstanding Optical Performance for the Age of High-Resolution Digital Cameras
Photographers expect more than outstanding image quality from a 24-70mm F2.8 Lens. They want a general-purpose Lens whose features cover a wide range of shooting situations.
They also want an optical design that is ideal for today's high-resolution digital cameras, a Hyper-Sonic Motor (HSM) for ultra-fast autofocus, an Optical Stabilizer (OS) with powerful stabilizing action, a dust- and splash-proof mount with rubber seal, and a metal barrel for a stable, reliable feel.
Designed from the ground up, the SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 DG OS HSM | Art delivers the performance and functionality to help professional photographers create successful shots for news, in nature or many other areas.
The fast standard zoom lens is perfect for today's high-resolution digital cameras. Three Super Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements and four aspherical lens elements provide aberration reduction. To ensure excellent image quality from the center to the edge of the photo, the optical system minimizes coma, where light rays would be dispersed and imaged similar to a comet tail, and lateral chromatic aberration, which cannot be corrected via aperture control. The optical system also reduces distortion that often occurs in wide-angle shooting, resulting in exceptional optical performance throughout the zoom range.
A Lens that Meets the High Standards of the SIGMA Art Product Line
We have always pioneered 24-70mm F2.8 lenses that are ahead of their time. The first model with this specification, the SIGMA 24-70 mm F2.8 EX DG ASPHERICAL DF, was launched in 2001. Now in the fourth generation of this product family, the new SIGMA 24-70 mm F2.8 DG OS HSM | Art, we have succeeded in the feat of integrating an optical stabilizer into a standard large-diameter zoom lens.
We have used our many years of design and manufacturing experience to ensure that this new lens can meet the uncompromising image and build quality requirements of the Art product line.
An even more beautiful bokeh
When the aperture is wide open, this lens enables exceptional photographic expression. The focused subject area is exceptionally sharp, while the background has beautiful bokeh with only minimal spherical aberrations. Since fast zoom lenses are often used with the aperture wide open, SIGMA has given its full attention to the appearance of the bokeh to obtain the perfect circular shape.
Using advanced technology to process aspherical lenses
Aspherical lenses of modern high-performance lenses require special expertise in design and manufacturing. Our first products using this technology were the SIGMA 12-24 mm F4 DG HSM | Art and SIGMA 14 mm F1.8 DG HSM | Art, both of which employ a large 80mm diameter aspherical lens as the front element. Building on the success of these predecessors, we also integrated an aspherical lens element into the SIGMA 24-70 mm F2.8 DG HSM | Art, which achieves extremely high resolution.
This element is much thicker in the center than at the edges, and shaping this unusual shape is a masterpiece of manufacturing technology. In addition, we machine the surface of this aspherical lens element to ultra-precise tolerances measured in hundredths of a micrometer. This extremely fine surface enables the SIGMA 24-70 mm F2.8 DG HSM | Art to produce a very natural and soft bokeh, without the visible concentric rings often found in conventional aspherical lens elements.
The OS function and Hyper-Sonic motor guarantee success in every shot
The Optical Stabilizer (OS) impresses with its powerful stabilizing effect and can therefore be used in many different situations. The redesigned, large Hyper-Sonic Motor (HSM) delivers 1.3 times more torque than its predecessor and provides exceptionally stable performance even at low speeds.
* Based on CIPA guidelines. Measured at telephoto on a camera with a 35mm full-frame image sensor.
Lens barrel with high rigidity
Because standard zoom lenses are often used as general-purpose lenses and are therefore used frequently, the SIGMA 24-70 mm F2.8 DG HSM | Art is designed to withstand the tougher shooting conditions that professional photographers face.
For this reason, the lens barrel is made largely of metal, while the outer moving parts are made of a thermally stable composite (TSC) material that is highly resistant to thermal expansion and contraction. This structure contributes not only to the Lens's exceptional optical performance, but also to its high strength and reliable workmanship.
Dust- and splash-proof mount
Since the Lens's mount is particularly susceptible to dust and other foreign objects, the rubber seal ensures peace of mind. The front lens element also has a water- and oil-repellent coating, so the lens performs well in the rain, near water, or in other difficult conditions.
Includes Nikon's electromagnetic iris mechanism
In the Nikon variant, the lens features the electromagnetic iris mechanism and is thus able to process signals from the camera body. This feature provides precise iris control and consistent performance during automatic exposure (AE) in continuous shooting mode.
(Note: Functionality may be limited with some camera bodies)
