  • High-performance lens
  • outstanding image quality
  • enormous contrast
  • Detail up to the corners of the image
The Leica Apo-Summicron-M 1:2/50 mm ASPH. represents - a good 30 years after the introduction of the Summicron-M 1:2/50 mm, which is still available - a completely new development.

Visibly higher imaging performance has been realized in its compact body, which - with almost the same diameter - is only minimally longer and only slightly heavier than the Summicron-M 1:2/50 mm.
In the Leica Apo-Summicron-M 1:2/50 mm ASPH. all image errors have been reduced to a negligible minimum, even in digital photography, thanks to the outstanding correction. It is characterized in particular by a very high contrast rendition that already extends into the image corners at open aperture.

The use of a "floating element" ensures that this is largely maintained even at short shooting distances. At full aperture, the maximum vignetting in 35 mm format, i.e. in the image corners, is approx. 2 f-stops; in the Leica M8 models, approx. 1 stop. By stopping down to 2.8, this light fall-off to the image edge is also visibly reduced - essentially only the natural vignetting then remains.

The distortion is extremely low at max. 0.4 % (pincushion-shaped) and thus practically imperceptible. A total of eight lenses are used to achieve this performance. Three are made of glass types with high anomalous partial dispersion (color dispersion) for apochromatic (lateral chromatic aberration) correction, and two of the others have high refractive power. The aspherical surface on the first lens of the rear element helps reduce spherical (aperture) error and flatten the image field. While the optical construction in front of the aperture corresponds to a Gauss-type, the arrangement of lenses behind it resembles the Summilux-M 1:1.4/35 mm ASPH. This entire link forms the aforementioned "floating element" that moves independently of the rest of the construction.

Conclusion:
With its outstanding imaging quality, the Leica Apo-Summicron-M 1:2/50 mm ASPH. represents a new reference in digital 35 mm photography.
