  • Expansion board or shield for the Arduino
  • Protocol documented in detail in the product manuals
  • unlimited possibilities
  • create completely customized solutions for Blackmagic devices

The Blackmagic 3G-SDI Arduino Shield is simply an expansion board or shield that is equipped with an SDI input and an SDI output. Any video source can be connected via the SDI input and the SDI output is connected to the camera. The commands of the camera control protocol are embedded in the outgoing signal. For software developers, using a Blackmagic 3G-SDI Arduino Shield is very easy. They simply look up the desired camera control commands in the user manual and insert them into the software code of the Arduino. This sends the code to the Blackmagic 3G-SDI Arduino Shield for embedding in the SDI connection.

The Blackmagic SDI Control Protocol uses the blanking intervals in SDI data streams to transmit commands for camera and lens control, color correction, program feedback, tally, talkback, etc. over SDI cable. This means that users do not need to set up expensive additional equipment or lay extra cables. The protocol documented in detail by Blackmagic Design in its product manuals is now also supported by other manufacturers. The Blackmagic SDI Control Protocol is integrated into Blackmagic cameras, ATEM mixers, DeckLink cards, Video Assist monitors and viewfinder products.

For example, you could build a simple controller with a joystick placed on the SDI shield and use it to send camera control commands to adjust focus and aperture. The possibilities are endless and this is an effortless way for users to create completely customized solutions for use with Blackmagic cameras, mixers and other devices.

The Blackmagic 3G-SDI Arduino Shield comes in the form of a simple double-sided SDI board that also powers the Arduino. The shield has a USB connector that can be used to update the product software with future updates from Blackmagic Design. It uses the 12C bus and can therefore be connected to the shield via a cable if it needs to fit into a customized body.
